Get ready for a summer of tennis in the South West
There’s no denying that in Australia we love our tennis. In January, Perth will welcome huge names – Nadal, Nishikori and Medvedev, among others – in the brand new ATP Cup. Then, later in the month, we will all be tuned into the Australian Open.
If watching the tennis will have you itching to reach for the racquet, why not consider a tennis-themed holiday? Choose holiday accommodation with a well-kept court om premises and make sure there’s a big screen TV so you can tune into the matches.
Holiday homes with tennis courts
If you want: a tranquil bush setting
The South West is well known for beaches, sun and surf. But equally as wonderful is waking up in the tranquillity of the Australian bush. As the morning sun peeks through the bushland that surrounds the property, listen to the bird song and watch kangaroos gently hopping nearby. Get up for a casual game of tennis, have a coffee out in the garden, then head out to nearby Aravina Estate or Wills Domain for lunch. If this sounds like your perfect day, check out High Ridge in Yallingup.
If you want: waterside and history
Mandurah’s Allandale is a 100-year-old heritage homestead and offers 180-degree views of the estuary. Here you’ve got surf beaches, trampolining and the much-loved golf course The Cut at your fingertips. It’s the perfect place to stay, play in the outdoors during the day and watch the sunset in the evening.
If you want: ocean views
Seize the day, starting with tennis to kickstart your mind and body. Then congratulate yourself with a calming morning tea or coffee looking out over the idyllic blue waters that Western Australia is famous for.
At Farm Break in Bunker Bay (this is actually two adjacent villas – great for extended families or groups of friends), you can take advantage of both tennis and golf facilities. If you want to be close to wineries and surf beaches, consider staying at Redgate in Margaret River.
You could join up to a school – or you could get a coach to come to you! Brad Millman of Millman Tennis runs coaching clinics across the South West and regularly travels to Private Properties guest homes.
“The sessions are always fun and the learning aspect of the game is the most important thing for me. For a family, the age and ability of the children may mean that the children learn separately for the parents, but there are many drills and games I play that incorporate the whole family,” Brad says.
“A group of friends is a little different. I like to keep the whole group on the court all at the same time so to keep the fun factor going. Technical advice is given to the individual throughout the sessions so each person receives the coaching they require. In a session, they can also expect to get put through fun drills with a range of intensity levels to suit all players, some doubles strategy, and some match play or even a little tournament.”
