Spring in residence: A study in light, colour and place

Spring doesn’t arrive all at once. It starts with brighter mornings, later sunsets and the first – albeit fresh – ocean dip.

Before long, though, spring’s taken up residence.

Like an artist, it paints beautiful scenes – of blossoming wildflowers, whales breaching dark blue sea, of green tapestries and sun-dappled rooms.

It leaves its mark on our holiday homes, too. Windows open, breakfast moves to the verandah and gardens burst with colour.

A study in light

The first signs of spring start with the way light returns to the home. Morning sun reaches further across bedroom floors and kitchens brighten earlier and earlier. Windows frame clear skies and the shifting shadows of trees outside, while rooms that offered shelter through winter begin opening themselves to the day.

At the coast, sun-soaked mornings carry the promise of a walk along the beach. In the country, afternoon light settles across vineyards, paddocks and surrounding bushland. As the days get longer, spring spreads comfortably across the region and the spaces we call home.

A study in colour

Spring has a confident hand with colour. Across Australia’s South West, the landscape becomes brighter and more richly layered; inside, its influence is quieter. Fresh flowers appear on the table, sunlight warms natural timber and greenery fills windows. The changing landscape is reflected in the textures, materials and artwork of the home.

Some stays borrow their palette from the muted greens and earthy tones of the bush. Others look out across vines, gardens or rolling farmland. Along the coast, white sand, blue water and weathered vegetation create an unmistakably South West expression of the season.

The strongest holiday homes feel inseparable from their surroundings. Their architecture responds to the landscape, drawing attention towards the view and creating a natural connection between indoors and out.

In spring, that relationship feels especially alive. Greener landscapes press closer, gardens soften the edges of the home and the changing weather draws attention to what lies beyond its walls.

Spring’s residency is brief. For a few months, the landscape is at its greenest, the days are growing warmer and the South West carries all the promise of summer without its peak-season pace.

It is a time for open windows, sunlit rooms and days that naturally find their way outdoors. A chance to see familiar places differently – or discover somewhere new while the season is leaving its mark.
