The Holiday Reset
Make your South West escape more than just a holiday with these simple rituals designed to help you unwind, relax and connect.
In a world where notifications never sleep, holidays are no longer about indulgence, but space: to breathe deeply, to move gently, and to reconnect with what makes us feel alive. Space, and all that it affords, is the perfect catalyst for a holiday reset, one that leaves you refreshed, relaxed and nourished.
Across Western Australia’s South West, this kind of reset, where connection isn’t on screens but with self, others and the elements, comes easily. Days drift to the soundtrack of the ocean, the hum of forest life, and the motion of the sun, beckoning you to relax and unwind in your own way and time.
But a real reset doesn’t just happen. You create it through small, intentional rituals that shape each day into something softer, slower, and more meaningful. In the South West, it looks a little something like this…
Sometimes all we need is a chance to switch off, to sync to nature’s rhythm, and to tune into Western Australia’s most sought-after luxury: space.
A gentle morning walk
The Japanese have a term called Shinrin-yoku – forest bathing. It’s the practice of mindfully immersing yourself in nature, in order to improve physical and mental wellbeing. Find shinrin-yoku during a stroll through Boranup Forest, or as you wind under the towering Tingle trees in Walpole-Nornalup National Park. A barefoot wander along the shores of Yallingup Lagoon, with waves lapping at your feet, is perfect if you’re struggling to feel grounded, while an amble between peppermint trees along the bush track stretching from Castle Rock to Meelup Beach in Eagle Bay invites you to reconnect with the simplicity of nature.

An ocean swim
Nothing quite resets the mind, body and soul like a refreshing ocean swim. Luckily, there’s no shortage of spots in the South West to take a dip. Eagle Bay offers up picture-perfect views of white and turquoise blue, while its calm, shallow and crystal-clear waters are ideal for swimming, snorkelling and paddleboarding. Bunker Bay, a little further down the way, is just as idyllic and exudes a beautiful sense of seclusion (and the brekkie at Ilma Beach House afterwards, prime views included, is a bonus inclusion). You’ll love diving into the turquoise-green water at Denmark’s Greens Pool, a natural swimming pool shaped by a ring of large granite boulders, but if you’re looking for a beach that’ll transport you far, far away, head to Little Beach near Albany.

A mindful meal
There’s a different kind of nourishment that comes from cooking simply and eating slowly. Visit a local farmers market (we love the Margaret River and Albany Farmers Markets), fill your baskets with fresh ingredients, and meander home. Allow yourself to cook with heart, not haste, and eat to savour. Not a fan of cooking? Lucky for you, the South West is home to some of the state’s best chefs and producers, who create experiences that not only celebrate local produce, but connect you to place, nature, and the people you’re with. Like a farm-to-table feast at Glenarty Road, a six seasons-inspired 6-course food and wine pairing at Yarri, and even eating fish and chips while watching the sunset at Busselton Foreshore.
“A long lunch with good friends is one of life’s most restorative rituals.”
An afternoon pause
Holiday schedules can fill quickly, even unintentionally. Build in an intentional pause – savour a cuppa, read a chapter of a book, run the bath you never run, or simply sit still long enough to notice the shift in the breeze. You’d be surprised at how a seemingly simple habit can calm and centre. Been exploring all day? Small cafés and local bakeries are great spaces to recharge between adventures. Enjoy custard-filled croissants amidst beautiful gardens at South West Bottega, flitter between bush and tea at Goanna Gallery, or share holiday stories and people-watch inside Mrs Jones.
A sunset ritual
Instead of ending the day glued to your phone, make sunset your evening anchor. Head to Surfers Point in Prevelly, Sugarloaf Rock, Yallingup Hill or Albany’s Mount Clarence, watch the sky change, breathe slowly and let the day settle. Watching the sunset is the perfect way to shift from adventure to rest, and eventually, will lead you straight to bed and a good night’s rest.

A reset that lasts
While each of these rituals is simple, their impact builds. A slow morning walk, a quiet ocean swim, a feast with friends, a west-coast sunset. They don’t take much effort, but together they shift how you feel, think and move. That’s the essence of a holiday reset: not dramatic transformation, but small, repeated choices that leave you clearer, calmer and more connected.
The greatest holidays are the ones that follow you home.
And the best part? These habits don’t have to stay in the South West. Take them home. Keep the morning walks, the unhurried meals, the device-free pauses, the early nights. Afterall, a holiday isn’t just about what you did, but how it makes you feel long after you’ve come back.
