Surf like a pro, stay like a pro

Are you looking to inject a little action to your leisurely holiday down south? Scattered along the 135kms of coastline of the Margaret River region are 75 world-class surf breaks — each teeming with cascading waves ridden by surfers on any given day of the year. Unsurprisingly, as well as being a popular holiday destination for domestic, interstate and international tourists, the Margaret River region is also home to some of the world’s best surfers.

A vivid history of surfing in Margaret River

Although the region is well-known for prime surfing conditions, the history of surfing in the Margaret River region isn’t all that lengthy. The presence of surfing started back in the early 1950s, when a team of surfers from Perth were exploring the area after attending a surf carnival in Bunbury. After stumbling upon Yallingup and the big, clean waves, word got out fast. A larger group of surfers were quickly drawn to the area.

By the late 1950s, surfers had broken away from Yallingup to explore surf breaks further south along the coast. Rumours were spreading about a wave twice the size of Yallingup in Margaret River, although the idea was initially dismissed as impossible. Curiosity got the better of the local surfers and by the beginning of the 1960s people were regularly surfing the monster waves of Margaret River.

Surfing in Margaret River has now gained international recognition — with the Margaret River Pro competition featuring as part of the World Surfing League (WSL) Championship Tour annually. In April of every year, the Margaret River Pro sees the top 34 ranked male and top 16 ranked female surfers in the world compete over a 12-day period. This year it will be held from 28 March to 8 April.
