And, as the largest city in one of Australia’s finest food-producing regions, we can add excellent cuisine to that enviable list.
Top 10 places to eat in Albany
As if plucked from the streets of Paris or New York, this trendy wine bar and bistro is all over that hard-to-perfect sultry, classy ambiance. Velvety red banquette seating, walls cluttered with black and white photos, plus that sophisticated retro bar, you’ll walk over the threshold and into another world. Pop in for tapas, a big glass of local wine, and soak up every delicious second.
A much-loved, award-winning venue, Liberte is the crown jewel in Albany’s trendy revival. This cosy and very cool bar-restaurant is housed inside historic London Hotel, and offers delectable Vietnamese food. Fusing eclectic decor, rambunctious jazz-era energy, and offers a haven away from the Great Southern winds whistling outside, it’s a delight for the senses.
This is one of the most stunning towns in the state, without a doubt. At Garrison, atop Mount Clarence, have breakfast, lunch or dinner with an unrivalled vista of the mighty deep blue bays. Higher-end than most local restaurants, it’s still a comfortable and social venue with share plates, and an extensive takeaway menu.
Gourmandise & Co
Part deli, part bakery, part coffee shop, and a general hive of activity, this little gem draws crowds daily. With dandelion-yellow walls and a long communal table, this is a joyful café indeed. The menu has a French flair (whipped up by a French chef, no less) and is mouth-wateringly good, so make sure you arrive early before the pastries sell out.
The Alkaline Café
Vegans, vegetarians, and those who simply like choice – rejoice! Did we mention gluten free, and the sit down menu is also nut free? Alkaline is proving that you can eat healthily and ethically without sacrificing taste. Gobble up dishes like a Banoffee Brekky, a Keto Bowl in all its green goodness, a spicy Jamaican Jerk Wrap, and a selection of luscious desserts.
Rustler’s Steakhouse & Grill
Meat-lovers, get your appetite and a big ol’ bib ready for a night out (or lunch) at the decently-priced Rustler’s. There’s a range of top-quality cuts and ribs to choose from, plus signature dishes like the ‘Horns and Prawns’ and ‘Steak Rustini’. If you don’t fancy red meat, there’s plenty of chicken and seafood options, and smaller share plates too.
This charming little cottage hides a not-so-secret secret: this is where you’ll find the best scones in the city. Sit out the back in the garden, sipping from a delicate floral tea cup and saucer, watching butterflies and small birds flutter about. Idyllic. There’s also a high tea on Sundays with finger sandwiches, scones with jam and cream, sausage rolls, and muffins, so book in advance for that.
Emu Point Café
With the most glorious view of the calm bay and aquamarine water, plus lots of green space to explore in the sunshine, Emu Point Cafe is perfect for the whole family. Take a seat on the verandah and tuck into yummy dishes like eggs benedict, beef burgers, and fried chicken banh mi, and then get a takeaway coffee and head out for a walk.
Where to go for the best brunch or lunch in Albany? There are several venues of a similar calibre to Kate’s Place, but we’ve chosen this one because we love the cosy interiors and fireplace. When it’s a blustery day with storms billowing across the Southern Ocean, where better to be than sinking into a big sofa in front of a toasty fire with a mug of hot chocolate?
