Mobile food vans were a very different beast 10 or 15 years ago. Regularly found at music festivals, fairs, and other community events, they typically served up fast, greasy food that wasn’t anything to write home about.
Well, times have changed.
The food truck revolution is thought to have started in Los Angeles in 2008, when a chef named Roy Choi found himself out of work. He started Kogi BBQ, a Korean taco van that travelled the city streets serving up inexpensive, hand-held food to party-goers and students. It didn’t take long for others to copy the popular concept. The fact that the GFC also began in the same year is probably no coincidence; many other chefs and business owners were looking at novel ways of doing things in a changing economic landscape.
The phenomenon didn’t take long to spread to Australia, and quickly found a place in the South-West too. With the region’s casual lifestyle and exceptional local produce, it has proven to be a match made in heaven.
Here are our top food van picks.
The Well Dressed Potato
A massive stuffed baked potato is comfort food heaven. Crispy skin, fluffy potato inside, and chock full of tasty filling. Choose tuna, chilli con carne, or The Classic – a slightly unusual but completely delish combination of bacon, pineapple and coleslaw.
Find them at: Rotary Park Busselton, from 11am to 2pm every day, except Friday (until 7pm) and Sunday (until 12:30pm).
Spice Odysee Indian Food Van
A stalwart of the area, this van serves up mouth-watering Indian favourites such as creamy butter chicken, spicy beef vindaloo, and vegetarian dahl. Even better, all the curries are gluten-free.
Find them at: Margaret River Rotary Park, Wednesday and Friday, 5pm to 7:30pm, and at Old Dunsborough Boat Ramp on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, 5pm to 7:30pm.

Kona Joe’s Health Shack
With a wholesome menu and a focus on fresh ingredients, Kona Joe’s has developed a cult following over the years. The smoothies, Cocowhips and acai bowls are healthy and tasty. This van is a morning ritual for some after a walk, run, swim or cycle along the Dunsborough foreshore.
Find them at: Dunsborough Foreshore, at the bottom on Dunn Bay Road. Weekdays, 8:30am to 3pm. Saturday and Sunday, 9am to 3pm. Closed Wednesday.
Hooked Up Fish and Chips
What could be more Australian than fish and chips on the beach, watching the sunset? The menu at this food truck is an absolute winner, and all seafood is 100 per cent locally-sourced, too. We thoroughly trying recommend the fish tacos.

Ma La Margaret River Dumplings
Northern Chinese flavours meet South-West’s top-quality produce to create these sumptuous dumplings. Try the Pimped Pork Dumplings with Ma La chilli oil, or the Norwester Cod Dumplings with chilli black bean.
Find them at: Margaret River Farmers’ Market. Saturday, 7:30am to 11:30am.
Margaret River Burger Company
The best burgers in the region using only the best ingredients. They can be found throughout the region at festivals and events, but can always find them at Cape Mentelle when you catch an outdoor movie.

Need a good coffee ASAP? The sleek Silver Bullet Espresso van can be found right on the Dunsborough foreshore. Choose from a big selection of teas, coffees, speciality hot drinks, and iced beverages. Plus, they sell yummy snacks like fresh baked cinnamon scrolls.
Find them at: Old Dunsborough Boatramp – Bay View Crescent, slightly north of the town centre. 7 days, 7:30am to 1pm.
