The best breakfasts in the South-West

Part of the fun of a holiday ‘down south’ is the opportunity to sample the amazing food on offer. Breakfast is an institution in this region, with countless restaurants, cafés and even food vans offering great coffee and breakfast dishes in unforgettable locations.

The trouble is, with so much on offer, where should you choose? We had the tough job of sampling the menus and we picked out some of the most popular cafés in the area that continuously serve up amazing meals.

Dunn Bay Continental

Where: 59 Dunn Bay Road, Dunsborough. Next to Southcamp.

Why eat here: This new kid on the block is a gourmet deli & food store, cafe, flower market and wine store. Enjoy the fresh, new environment at the western end of town for coffee and breaky and then shop in the deli for gourmet delights for your holiday.

Eagle Bay Olives (EBO)

Where: 521 Cape Naturaliste Road, Eagle Bay. En route from Dunsborough to Eagle Bay.

Why eat here: A unique and peaceful setting on an established olive estate, trees were planted in 1988. The locals rave about Tristan’s coffees and the breakfast delights. You can also create yourself a gourmet platter from the farm shop produce to savour under the olive trees. A great spot on the way to or from the beach!

Goanna Gallery Café

Where: 278 Hayes Road, Quindalup. A 10-minute drive from Dunsborough

Why eat here: Set in a relaxing, tranquil bush setting, Goanna Gallery Café is a little off the beaten track. The food here is always top notch and has everything from fluffy pancakes and big breakfasts with the lot, through to the ‘Indo Breakfast’ with spiced coconut rice, fried egg, spinach and avocado, and the Texan-inspired breakfast brisket.

Margaret River Bakery

Where: 89 Bussell Highway, Margaret River

Why eat here: This is so much more than ‘just’ a bakery. Get settled inside the quirky-but-quaint European-inspired café and devour buttery pastries, French toast, fat pancakes, crunchy granola and stuffed brekky burgers. Get in early though, because it is understandably busy and the best pastries often sell out by the early afternoon.

Artézen

Where: 1/234 Naturaliste Terrace, Dunsborough

Why eat here: Right in the middle of Dunsborough town centre is perennial favourite, Artézen. This café has been around for more nearly 20 years and consistently serves up generous portions of delicious breakfast for their customers. Try the sweet corn fritters with chorizo and avocado, the smoked salmon rösti or creamy eggs Florentine. Plus, Artezen has a large selection of fresh juices and smoothies.

White Elephant Cafe

Where: Gnarabup Road, Gnarabup. A 10-minute drive from Margaret River

Why eat here: White Elephant sits atop the hill with a gorgeous view over the bay. This is a casual dining experience with plenty of people in beachwear and sporting sandy hair. Tuck in to lighter beach-worthy dishes such as bircher muesli or try something substantial like the brioche brekky burger topped with crispy bacon, fried egg, Swiss cheese, garlic aioli and smoked tomato relish.

La Lah, Dunsborough

Where: Shop 3, 27 Dunn Bay Road, Dunsborough. Next to Christian Fletcher Gallery.

Why eat here: La Lah is a great spot to sit in the sunshine as you catch up with friends and do some ‘people watching’ in central Dunsborough. A fresh menu with breakfast classics and a few interesting dishes for the culinary adventurers. The drinks list has something for everyone from coffee and hot chocolates to award-winning wines and cocktails.

The Goose

Where: Geographe Bay Road, Busselton foreshore, Busselton

Why eat here: Start your day at the beach at the up-market Goose with French crepes with berry compote and double cream, a big breakfast fry-up with the lot or be adventurous and try out the waffles with fried chicken, watermelon, fried egg and maple syrup. Then sit back and soak in the views of the beautiful calm blue waters of Geographe Bay and historic Busselton Jetty stretching nearly 2km out to sea.
