Jay’s Beach House – your nostalgic Augusta adventure awaits
For Allie and her family, Augusta is more than just a destination – it’s tradition. From her own childhood summers, to her children’s more recent seaside adventures, the sleepy coastal town of Augusta has long been the backdrop for Allie’s most cherished family holidays. Now, from the sanctuary of Jay’s Beach House, Allie’s helping others create their own Augusta traditions.
Augusta holds a special place in the heart of Jay’s Beach House owner Allie, who spent her childhood summers in and around the ocean-hugging town. “My children have grown up holidaying down there too – we love it,” Allie says. “As soon as you drive into the town, it just feels like a weight lifts, and you can truly rest and enjoy yourself.”
“Augusta is still quite wild compared to the rest of the southwest,” Allie says. “It’s relatively undeveloped; there’s something really rustic and rugged about the coastline, and the township itself is very simple, which is exactly what you want when you’re trying to get away from it all.”

The “Augusta Effect”
Restful, nostalgic and unchanged in many ways – Augusta has remained a family holiday go-to for decades. Why?
“There’s some things about Augusta that are exactly the same from when we were kids, and there’s just a great deal of comfort in that,” Allie says. “It feels like there’s a stillness to it and time stops.”
Old swimming holes look the same as they did 20 years ago, food stops like the Augusta Bakery and The Colour Patch can still be found in the same locations, albeit with a slightly different look and feel, and families continue to gather near the Turner Street Jetty, where Allie’s children once lined up with their friends each summer for a group photo.

Local and Nearby Favourites
And while Augusta somehow never changes, Allie says there’s always something new to do.
“The lighthouse tour at Cape Leeuwin is a must if you haven’t already experienced it,” Allie says. “It’s always incredible to think about how the lighthouse keepers and their families lived out there in what was a very remote place at the time.”
“I love a morning swim at Flinders Bay, heading up to the water wheel at sunset, having a cocktail at the Colour Patch, and walking from Jay’s Beach House all the way up to the marina,” she says. “It’s a beautiful walk from the front of the house all the way up along the coast and you can get a coffee there before heading back.”
Allie says there’s actually bottles of wine that are being cellared under the ocean at the marina, which you can buy at Glenarty Road – one of her recommendations for lunch if you’re venturing between Augusta and Margaret River. There’s also McHenry Hohnen Cellar Door and Dear Darnell’s in Witchcliffe, both must-dos for a tasty tipple and a nice bite to eat.
“I think there’s something really special about the sense of provenance that you get when you go to a cellar door in the region and you meet the team who grow the grapes and make the wines,” Allie says, of visiting Margaret River’s wineries. “And I love stopping in the middle of the Boranup Forest and soaking it all in.”
Allie admits, though, she’s not impartial to doing absolutely nothing, or simply relaxing in her basket chair with a good book. That’s the “Jay’s Beach House effect”.

A Place That Feels Like Home
Allie bought Jay’s Beach House because of how it felt: like home. A place for her and her family to relax, reconnect and reset.
Most times when they’re down, you’ll find them hanging out in the upstairs living room – a peaceful space bathed in natural light.
“At the right time of the year, you can see whales breaching in the bay from the balcony,” Allie says. “And at sunset, the dolphins in the river come out, as well as the stingrays.
“During the windy months, you’ll often see kite surfers cruising and flying about. It’s incredible.”
And when Allie and her family aren’t around, she’s hoping you’ll get the chance to come down and make Jay’s a sanctuary of your very own.
