Djeran in WA’s South West
Goodbye summer. Welcome to the calm of Djeran, where the fierce heat of summer softens, cool evenings return, and dew begins to settle across the South West landscape.
Djeran is one of the six seasons recognised by the Noongar people of South West Western Australia, marking a gentle transition as summer fades and the region settles into a calmer, more balanced time of year.
Also known as the “season of adulthood”, Djeran is recognised by cooler nights and the shift in wind patterns – summer’s strong easterlies give way to gentler breezes from the south and southwest.
Djeran is a season that feels beautifully balanced. In the South West, the ocean still holds the warmth of summer, making it perfect for morning swims or a quiet dip after a long day exploring, but the crowds of peak season begin to thin, and the pace of life softens along with the temperature.
It’s a time that invites you outdoors. Long walks along the Cape to Cape Track feel especially rewarding now, with clear skies, crisp air and sweeping coastal views. Inland, vineyards are abuzz with activity as harvest season unfolds, making it an ideal time to settle in for a long lunch or a leisurely afternoon of wine tasting.
Djeran is also a season for slowing down in a different way. Days might begin with a coastal walk or coffee in the sunshine, before drifting into an afternoon of exploring local galleries, farm gates and cellar doors. As evening falls a little earlier, the mood shifts again – perhaps a glass of red by the fire, a shared meal around the table, or simply watching the last of the light fade beyond the trees.
As summer’s energy begins to settle, the calm that Djeran brings begins to emerge, and the South West becomes softer, quieter, and begs you to find all of those moments and experiences you’ve longed to savour.
