A vegetarian and vegan foodie trail through the Margaret River region
*Part two in a four-part foodie series*
Forget the same old pumpkin risotto and plates of unappetising salad. Let us take you on a journey, checking out the venues offering fantastic vegetarian and vegan food in the Margaret River region.
Rustico at Hay Shed Hill
Rustico at Hay Shed Hill – one of the region’s very best with Mediterranean-style meals and group-friendly degustation dining options – has a superb five-course dedicated vegan menu. Imagine tucking into dishes like spiced chickpeas, oyster mushroom ceviche, and finished sweetly with a blood orange Bombe Alaska. And for the cherry on top, vegan wine is available too.
A saucy Mediterranean feast at Casina welcoming vegans with open arms. Vegetarians can choose off the regular menu too, but there is an entire vegan a la carte menu to get stuck into. Tapas-like entrees, innovative salads, hearty pastas, and scrumptious desserts. And you simply can’t leave without trying the gooey sticky date pudding with vanilla vegan ice cream.
Farming their own eggs, olives, grapes, honey, fruit, and vegetables, Arimia’s veggie patch actually supplies the majority of produce on your plate. The restaurant was recently awarded a ‘Chef Hat’, plus it was a Regional Restaurant of the Year 2020 finalist, so there’s no doubt the experience here will be memorable. Let them know when booking that you’re after a vegetarian or vegan menu.
Kona Joe’s Health Shack
Crunching along the road with sandy feet, a towel slung over your shoulders, and a rumbling tum ready for a snack. Just ahead is a food truck for all your summer dreams: Kona Joe’s Health Shack. All food at this Dunsborough favourite is vegan, gluten-free, dairy-free, and refined sugar-free. Try the acai bowl with granola, fresh fruit, seeds, and a dollop of Coco Whip.
This gem is a foodie paradise for vegans. Dunsborough’s Conscious Craves has so many creative plant-based brunch options, and a small shopping corner to buy goods too. Bircher, bagels, burgers, and waffles – it’s all delicious here. The smoothies are also something to write home about (the Salted Caramel gets our thumbs up).
The trendy spot has chic everything – from the décor to the cocktails to the plating finesse – Lady Lola is the bistro we keep coming back to. There is stunning simplicity in their dishes where each ingredient has the opportunity to shine. A large number of menu items are vegetarian, but do ask for their vegan offerings as the venue will be more than happy to accommodate.
Bayside Burger Bar
Meat-free but definitely not flavour-free. There’s the vegetarian burger ‘Injidup’ with a lentil and vegetable patty, and the vegan ‘Greenacres’ with a black bean patty. All the meat-based burgers can be made vego, or you can request a Beyond Burger patty instead. Bayside also supplies vegan mayonnaise and vegan cheese so you don’t have to go without.
Simmos Ice Creamery
This Dunsborough institution offers eight different vegan ice cream flavours, although they update and rotate their menu continually. Plonk down on the spacious leafy grounds out the back, devouring flavours like salted pistachio, watermelon sorbet, or chocolate coconut cream. If you have children, the Simmos family fun park is a great place to let them play and burn off energy.
This Margaret River joint is one of the OG vegetarian/vegan eateries in the area. A rustic cosy cafe on the main drag, Urban Bean ‘wholefood vegetarian kitchen’ is a cheerful place with ochre walls and sky blue chairs. Grab an almond milk latte as you ogle the menu. Flaky spanakopita and vegan burritos, tantalising cakes and freshly baked pastries – there’s plenty of feel good food to enjoy.
Margaret River Brewhouse
Surrounded by forest, the band playing, a fort nearby for your kids, soaking up the sunshine on the verandah, and a slice of pizza washed down with a beer; the Brewhouse is where it’s at for a relaxed afternoon. The menu is large and has some good vegetarian options in the form of share plates, pizza, and salad. You may need to call to ask about vegan options, however.
Vegetarians and vegans, you’ll be in your element on your next holiday. The Margaret River region is overflowing with inventive and delicious fare – minus the meat. Browse our portfolio of luxury holiday homes today.
