Walking into winter

Farewell the last days of autumn with a long walk in the wide and wonderful outdoors.

The most spectacular walk of all in the South West would have to be the Cape to Cape Track, a designated trail between Cape Naturaliste in the north (Bunker Bay) and Cape Leeuwin in the south (Augusta).

It meanders along some amazing countryside, including desolate white beaches, tall forests and stretches of rocky coastline. Even if you’re not quite up to walking the whole distance in one go (it is 135km long, after all!), there are some wonderful highlights you could easily cover in a morning or an afternoon, children and lunch basket in hand.

The Friends of the Cape to Cape Track website has information plus a handy map to help you plan your trek. We highly recommend taking a look at Section 4 on the map, an area including the majestic tall karri trees of Boranup Forest, beautiful Boranup Beach and the dramatic cliffs at Contos (Cape Freycinet).

Also, be sure to visit awesome Canal Rocks, closer to Yallingup, a series of protruding granite rocks and outcrops that have formed a natural ‘canal’ that is quite breathtaking to see, especially when the swell is high. Walk across a footbridge to experience the rush of the ocean below your feet.

But perhaps one of the best trails of all is the savoured walk back home — to a cosy wood fire and a glass of special red!
