Where to find great coffee in the Margaret River region

Published September 13, 2017 by Private Properties
We’ve found the best coffee spots in WA’s South-West, so you don’t have to go searching.

What’s your take on the perfect coffee?

Do you like a frothy, silky cappuccino with a hint of chocolate sprinkles, or are you more of a straight-up double espresso type? How about a short macchiato topped up or do you prefer to slurp down an iced coffee regardless of the weather outside? You might even be a fan of the ‘dirty chai’ or Vietnamese coffee, which is served with a liberal splash of sweetened condensed milk (it’s very good, we promise).

Regardless of what camp you’re in, it’s the quality of the coffee, great milk and the skill of the barista that matters most. Here in the South-West, we take our food and drink seriously, so we are fortunate to have incredible cafés throughout the region.

Private Properties put out the call on our Facebook page for your favourite coffee haunts and we got a great response. We also scoured the net for the top-rated spots and added our favourites too. We managed to narrow it down to nine of the best, spread between Dunsborough and Margaret River: some are coffee bars or sit-down cafés, some are vans and others are drive-throughs.

The winner’s list:

Hot Chocolatte

With near-perfect ratings on Google, Trip Adviser and Facebook, Hot Chocolatte alone is worth making a trip to Dunsborough. Don’t be fooled by the name — offered among the lip-smacking cakes, biscuits and hot chocolates, is equally impressive coffee. It’s certainly not a token menu addition and the staff here do it as well as everything else instore.

Where: 42 Dunn Bay Road, Dunsborough

Goanna Gallery & Café

This one is a little different from the others on our list because it isn’t by the beach or in a town centre. Instead, it is nestled in pristine bushland a few kilometres from Yallingup. This always-busy café serves up a full breakfast and brunch menu and, of course, exceptional coffee.

Where: 278 Hayes Rd, Quindalup

Yallingup Coffee Roasting Company

A stalwart of the South-West coffee scene, Yallingup Coffee Roasting Company set the coffee bar high a long time ago. They roast two dozen of their own blends, including fair trade and organic beans.

Where: 7b/233 Naturaliste Terrace, Dunsborough

Pronto Cino

In a departure from the bricks and mortar coffee shops, Pronto Cino is a coffee van run by locals Mark and Shelley. They can be found seven days a week at the Slippery Rocks carpark at Yallingup Beach, which is the perfect spot to grab a hot cup of coffee and watch the waves roll in. You’re also in the perfect spot to catch a glimpse of whales and dolphins.

Yahava KoffeeWorks

Roasting and blending their own coffee beans, and also making to order, Yahava has a flavour to cater to everyone’s taste. Spend some time sampling the varieties, with coffee tastings open from 9am to 4:30pm. If you need your favourite caffeine fix but don’t have time to stop, there’s a Kwik Koffee drive-through on site.

Where: Corner Rosa Brook Road and Bussell Highway, Margaret River

Sidekick Cafe

A funky, cosy café, Sidekick serves up silky coffees and a full breakfast menu. You can also find different types of drinks on the menu including turmeric or matcha lattes, pots of chai and cold-drip coffee brews. Plus they’re big on being eco-friendly, using biodegradable cups, napkins, bags and straws.

Where: 5/110 Bussell Hwy, Margaret River

Brew Shack Espresso Bar

This ‘down south’ favourite can be found right in the middle of Margaret River, on Bussell Highway. Like Sidekick, the owners are environmentally conscious and serve up their silky, creamy blends in biodegradable cups. They now also stock their own Brew Shack-branded glass reusable coffee mugs — perfect to drink their expertly crafted coffee from.

Where: 2/124 Bussell Highway, Margaret River

The Cure

Another one that unsurprisingly made an appearance on our Facebook list is The Cure, in the Dunsborough Lakes area. There are several things that make this a great little spot, aside from quality coffee. It’s perfect to grab a relaxing coffee after a game of golf and they have a drive-through service for those who can’t stop for long. Plus, with three shots in a medium-sized cup, caffeine fans will love it.

Where: 1/20 Faure Lane, Dunsborough

Albert + Nikola

Coffee snobs and coffee geeks unite. This quirky, personality-filled café with big, bright windows that face into the Dunsborough town centre is a big winner. The café is named for two giants in the scientific field — Albert Einstein and Nikola Tesla. The baristas here serve up consistently great coffee in a friendly, relaxed setting. If you’re just passing through, make sure you buy a bag or two to take home.

Where: 14/34 Dunn Bay Rd, Dunsborough

The Margaret River region is renowned for wine, food, and craft beer. The coffee created here is just as exceptional. If you’re traveling further South, be sure to try the Naked Bean in Albany, and Ravens in Denmark.
