The stage is set for another fantastic festival to heat up WA’s South-West.

Here’s a question for you: Is there anything better than a weekend trip down South to take in the delights of Busselton, Margaret River, Bunbury and Dunsborough?

What if there were plenty of really great films to see at the same time?

The good news is, CinfestOZ is back for another year The film festival is now in its tenth year and brings with it a plethora of fantastic films for local and visiting audiences — and a few big stars will be making the trip to walk the red carpet, too!

For the love of film

This year’s festival shines the spotlight on a locally produced Ben Elton film called Three Summers, which will open the festival on Wednesday, August 23 in Busselton at Orana Cinemas.

The film is set over three summers at The ‘Westival’, a fictional West Australian rural folk festival which local radio personality ‘Queenie’ describes as “Australia in a tent”.  It stars Aussie acting greats Michael Caton and Magda Szubanski and was shot in Pinjarra in Western Australia.

Other delights at this year’s festival include the Margaret River premiere of ‘OtherLife’, which was shot in Western Australia. It’s a sci-fi thriller that will have you on the edge of your seat.

Dealing with virtual reality and escaping the confines of our minds, OtherLife is directed by award-winning writer and director Ben C. Lucas and is based on the popular novel Solitaire. It plays at CinefestOZ on Thursday, August 24.

National themes explored

You can also catch the premiere of Australia Day’, starring Australian acting royalty Bryan Brown, at the festival this year.

Exploring the ideas of national identity and racial tensions, this electrifying film will get you thinking about what it means to be Australian in today’s modern age.

The stars will walk the red carpet for this one, so be sure to book ahead and secure your seat for the August 25 screening.

And even if you don’t catch the films, there is a host of other great side events that happen around the festival, called In Conversation, where you can get up close and personal with visiting actors and directors to learn about the craft and how they fund their dream projects.

These all happen at fabulous down South venues such as Bunker Bay Café, Amelia Park Restaurant and Eagle Bay Brewing Co.

Did someone say Gala?

If you’re heading down South for CinefestOZ 2017, then you won’t want to miss its night of nights, the Gala on Saturday, August 26 — where the winner of the CinefestOZ Film Prize is announced.

Then after the formalities, kick off your shoes down-South style and enjoy the tenth birthday party at festival Hub, with great live music, delicious food and the region’s best wine.

Seaside style

Not that you need another reason to go, but the beautiful seaside towns of Busselton, Bunbury, Margaret River and Dunsborough also have some great bars involved in the festival.

Called “Side Bars”, each night a local bar opens its doors to welcome festival-goers who have just enjoyed a film.

It’s the perfect end to your festival experience: Enjoying a glass of the South-West’s finest wine or beer as you discuss the ins and outs of the film with fellow film buffs.

This year bars taking part include Settlers Tavern, Café 140, The Rose Hotel, Jewel Cave Café and the iconic Caves House.
