Last minute planning for the Gourmet Escape

Published Thursday, October 4, 2018 in What's On & Events

The annual Margaret River Gourmet Escape is a must-do on any serious food and wine lover’s events calendar.

Held over three days from November 16 to 18, this year’s festival is promising to be a feast for the senses with a packed program of 45 food and wine events taking place in more than 25 unique locations across the South-West.

Much-loved British TV personality, author and self-professed gourmand Nigella Lawson returns to headline the event this year, joined by 45 world-class chefs such as Rick Stein, Skye Gyngell, James Lowe, Julien Royer and Niki Nakayama, as well as Australian culinary stars including Guy Grossi, Luke Mangan and Guillaume Brahimi.

The full programme can be found at, but here are five events we’ve circled to get you started.

Nigella Lawson

If you’re one of Lawson’s legion of devoted fans, you can catch her at six events at the Gourmet Escape. Tickets to the more intimate Supper With Nigella at Xanadu Wines, Nigella’s Tea Party at Howard Park, and Wine & Sign with Nigella are at a premium and likely to sell out, but her appearances at Best Seats in the House, the Westpac Gourmet Beach BBQ and Chef’s Amphitheatre in the Gourmet Village are other opportunities to see the British food celebrity in person.

A list of Lawson’s events and links to tickets can be found here.

Gourmet Village

A must-see for anyone visiting the Gourmet Escape, the Gourmet Village will be held at the Leeuwin Estate over two days and feature produce from more than 150 local wineries and artisan producers, as well as a host of culinary stars on stage at the Chef’s Amphitheatre. This is where you go if you want to capture the essence of the South-West’s food and wine offerings in one stunning location.

Chow’s Table Chinese Feast

Newly-opened Yallingup restaurant Chow’s Table will play host to three of the best chefs in modern Chinese cuisine who are teaming up for an evening of food, drink and story-telling. Local culinary hero Malcolm Chow will be joined by Michelin-starred chef Andrew Wong (A. Wong, London) and Victor Liong (Lee Ho Fook, Melbourne) with wines from neighbouring cellar door, House of Cards.

Feast in the Forrest

The Safari Club, a charming old barn hidden amongst the trees of Leeuwin Estate, will be the scene for six whole beast barbecues starring three of the world’s top chefs. Jerry Mai (Annam, Melbourne) will prepare a Vietnamese Whole Hog feast, Jeremy Chan (Ikoyi, London) will plate up a West African inspired barbecue, while Jake Kellie (Burnt Ends, Singapore) will cook up an Australian version. All three feasts will be paired with Leeuwin Estate wines.

Westpac Gourmet Beach BBQ

The Gourmet Beach BBQ has become a signature event of the Gourmet Escape. Held over the entire weekend, you can book a lunch or dinner session and enjoy canapés, free-flow beer and wine, and a gourmet barbecue feast all while in the company of culinary icons such as Nigella Lawson, local Matt Stone (Oakridge Estate, Yarra Valley), Rick Stein and his son, Jack Stein.
